The Ripple Container Home Project
The Ripple Container Home Project was Ireland’s first fully-compliant shipping container home.
It was a long time coming. In development for over 2 years, the Ripple Container Home Project reached completion by way of a 3-day final assembly at the IMMA (Irish Museum of Modern Arts) from November 27-30th. The project was a collaborative effort, beginning with Carol Tallon, Derek Trenaman and his team at Ceardean Design & Construction in Dublin and Buyers Broker International as part of a unique charity initiative benefiting the SVP (St Vincent de Paul of Ireland).
Tallon and her team of planners, architects and builders had a lot of hurdles to jump over in repurposing the used 40′ shipping container into a livable space. This wasn’t just any old construction project, they had to deal with the many changes in the housing market, with included the moving target of Cork’s building codes. They received an opportunity to display at a music festival before settling on the IMMA in Kilmainham, Dublin. Once it completed it’s run at the museum, it was donated to the SVP in December, who were planning to relocate the home at their Deerpark Hostel site in Cork City to be used as a temporary emergency shelter, accommodating homeless men from Cork. The hope is that everything would be completed by Christmas.
The reasons behind why she wanted to do this were many. According to Tallon, “Up to now, Ireland has been left some distance behind the changing global trends for housing, namely the departure from the notion of permanency or lifetime debt which has given rise to a more movable society that needs flexibility in terms of home ownership. A low cost model of housing was inevitable after the property market crash, and this container project shows that there are new housing solutions available to accommodate different lifestyle choices for Irish people. We are hugely proud of getting the project to this stage and look forward to seeing it being utilized as a home by a worthy cause.”
