Turning Shipping Containers Into A Tropical Retreat
When acclaimed photographer Sergio Pucci wanted to build a home and office on his 6000+ square-foot plot of land, architect Maria Jose Trejos suggested turning shipping containers into a tropical retreat.
Pucci asked Trejos to come up with an idea of what to build on his plot of land land in Guachipelin, Escazú, San José, Costa Rica. And when Trejoc suggested shipping containers, Pucci jumped at the idea. The result is Casa Incubos. Finished in 2013, it’s a beautifully designed tropical home and office for Pucci and his wife, a yoga teacher.
The 8 used containers were sourced at the country’s busy Caribbean port of Puntarenas, then stacked together to form a 2-story home and office. “Designing with containers amplifies what I really like,” says Trejos. “In terms of versatility, good taste and modern architecture, this is how I love to design.”
In keeping with the idea of using recycled materials (such as the used shipping containers), Trejos made sure the rest of the house was built from mostly green or renewable resources that had the least amount of environmental impact. There is enough cross ventilation to eliminate the need for air conditioning and there is enough solar energy created to eliminate the need for water heaters. Using an already created element reduced the carbon footprint that normally would be associated with brick and masonry homes that are prevalent in Costa Rica. In addition, it’s estimated that it took 20% less time to finish the project with a 20% cost savings to boot!
We think Casa Incubo is an excellent representation of what can be accomplished by building with used shipping containers.
