The QUO Shipping Container Mall In Buenos Aires

The QUO Shipping Container Mall In Buenos Aires is the latest in a string of container malls that are made almost entirely from repurposed shipping containers.

Located in Ingeniero Maschwitz, a sleepy suburb of Buenos Aires,  the QUO Container Center (as it’s called) is inspired by Container City and Boxpark in London. Designed by Cecilia Bertezzolo, the founder of BZZ Architecture, the center is built from 57 used shipping containers. And as the container center is situated close to several deep water ports (Zarate and Campana), the containers themselves were fairly easy to source. Retrofitting and building out the mall was a little trickier, and that task was assigned to Ecosan SA, a commercial construction company, specializing in modular green building methods.

The mall was built to be as eco-friendly as possible, with plenty of open spaces for natural light, and an array of solar panels that provide for electricity.  There’s also a 3300 sq ft literal green roof to provide insulation and plenty of covered terraces for shade to escape the sometimes brutal sun of the summer in the River Plate.

But it’s the containers themselves that are the star attraction of this mall/center. Retrofitted according to the specific use, they make the perfect modular restaurant, cafe, retail store or office. And if the lease for the land expires and you need to move the mall (as has happened in London and to a shipping container hotel in Brussels) you can simply uproot and move the container to a new site. The low cost, portability and speed of construction make shipping container one of the hottest trends in mall construction.

And speaking of building things with used shipping containers, has this article motivated you to build your own shipping container mixed use mall? Or perhaps an smaller version of what you see here in Argentina? Sourcing from sellers worldwide just got a whole lot easier.
