The Arcgency Pop-Up Shipping Container Offices

The Arcgency Pop-Up Shipping Container Offices, called the Unionkul Stack-1, are the newest addition to the northern Copenhagen waterfront.

Designed by the Architectural firm, Arcgency, the pop-op offices are the new home of the the Unionkul freight forwarding company. Created from multiple used 40′ conex boxes, the finished building gives an otherwise bleak transitional shipping yard a sense that change is in the air as the waterfront begins it’s transformation from working docks to residential housing.

And it’s happening all over the world. Run down docks that are too small for super-tankers go through multiple phases; from vibrant working shipping yards teeming with longshoremen to abandoned ghost towns — seemingly overnight. Then gentrification begins as developers see massive lots of vacant waterfront property, and bingo, instant neighborhoods. In Argentina it started in the neighborhood of La Boca. When the ships got too big, the larger and more centrally located Puerto Madero started to thrive. And when the container ships got too big there, the docks were abandoned to a larger, deeper harbor further up the River Plate. Then the city — or a smart developer — comes along and buys up all of the abandoned property and turns it into either offices, residential building or in the case of Puerto Madero, mixed -use, where Microsoft offices bump up against the incredible Cabanas Las Lilas Restaurant and high-rise apartment building sprout up like bean stalks taking advantage of the cool, new neighborhood with built in views.

And that is exactly what’s happening in the Nordhavnen Copenhagen dock areas. But while the process is in the planning stages, Arcgency created this easy-to-move office building for the Unionkul Company.  This made-to-be-moved office building takes advantage of the abundant supply of used shipping containers available at the docks, insulated with with perforated steel sandwich panels and triple-paned glass (to fight the potentially brutal Scandinavian climate). The containers are stacked 3-high and the interiors are meant to be spacious and take advantage of abundant natural light.

One of the major philosophies of Arcgency is the use of reusable building materials. And the materials used to create the Unionkul-1 project are 90% repurposed. They consider it their “responsibility to to create a better world, with better cities without exploiting nature.” They do this by incorporating the “RCA”.
