Meet ContainerVille, London’s Shipping Container Office Space
If you don’t want to work from home and can’t yet afford a full stand-alone office, meet ContainerVille, London’s Shipping Container Office Space.
Somewhere between the notepad where the next great idea resides — and the large, expensive office your brilliant idea so clearly deserves — lies ContainerVille, a cool efficient and affordable alternative.
The founders are basically following a trend called up-cycling in East London; taking run-down industrial areas and preserving the historical value of the area while bringing it back to modern life, so to speak. According to the ContainerVille site, “it’s a method of conserving the area’s heritage of hard graft and of weaving local businesses into the urban fibre.”
Reflecting the industrial feel of the Cambridge Heath area of London and launched in late 2014, ContainerVille combined 30 used and refurbished shipping containers over 2 floors next to the Regents Canal to create a cool, modern-feeling office space, where the next up-and-coming business can rent out only the space they need.
But we’re not talking empty shell, soulless cubicles where there’s simply a desk and a plug for your laptop, (and maybe a slow wi-fi connection). No, this is the real deal: a well thought-out, modern, high-tech office space where tenants can connect to multiple 100mb internet hubs. There’s perimeter trunking for plug points, double-glazed windows, ceiling lighting, a shared basic kitchen unit, a Juliet balcony, restrooms and showers. Each refurbished shipping container can accommodate up to 8 desks, the perfect amount for a small start-up. Tenants have 24 hour access, including tight security with closed circuit security cameras and secure gates.
And, of course, one of the ancillary benefits of having so many high-tech, inspirational companies in such a small area is the natural tendency to collaborate and share ideas, which, aside from repurposing shipping containers, is this author’s favorite part of the project.
Each unit enjoys a great view and there are multiple public transportation lines close-by, not to mention walking and bike trails. Close by is the Broadway Market and other great eating and shopping options.
Containerville is the brainchild of Estate Office Shoreditch, a company that “take(s) the long-term view of property ownership, providing good quality work spaces, offices and studios to businesses large and small.”
Sounds good to us — especially if it involves the use of shipping containers!
