A Modern Shipping Container Home in Dallas

Not all is what it seems. And this beautiful, modern shipping container home in Dallas, Texas is a good example of that idiom.

As I was doing research for this PV14 House, I discovered that nowhere in the Web Site that the owners so helpfully created to go along with the home does it state the obvious: that the home is made first and foremost from shipping containers. Supplied by Dolphin Containers out of Hong Kong, it’s hard to tell if they’re new or used, though a recent comment in a Dallas Observer article mentioned that you can still see the BIC-Code and other identifying markings, so I’m inclined to think they’re one-trip containers.

(For those that don’t know, a one trip container is one that has been loaded with goods, shipped {usually from China where 97% of the worlds containers are built}, unloaded then sold right away on the secondary market, such as here at Shipped.com.)

Designed by the M Gooden Design team and Matt Moody from One Arts, the PV14 house was built using 14 used shipping containers and sits on Peavy Road (hence the name “PV14”). And though the home uses shipping containers both for structure and style, many of the supporting / connecting walls have been removed and reinforcing columns have been added for strength. While shipping containers are strong enough for multiple ’round-the-world trips exposed to the elements, the loads bear at the corners, so any cross-stacking or stacking at an angle needs the help of steel re-bar and concrete masonry.

Regarding the design of the house, according to one of the owners, Matt: “A primary goal for this house was to design & build a modern residence that has a unique character, responds to its specific location/orientation and employs the construction technologies that are readily available, but not often used in current residential construction”.

The first floor has floor to ceiling windows, a fireplace, a small kitchen and is essentially built for entertainment. The second and third floors are the main living areas of the house and are what give the house its really unique look and feel. While all of the walls are covered in sheet rock, they left the ceilings exposed so you wouldn’t forget what you’re standing in. They also took the doors from the containers and re-purposed them into bedroom doors, again so you wouldn’t forget where you were. Like that’s a possibility here!

The third floor is the star with two outside balconies offering 360 degree views of White Rock Lake and Downtown Dallas.

At 3400 square feet in total, with 3 bedrooms and 3.5 baths, this is quite an amazing house. When they started the house, they knew they wanted it to be an art piece. And we think they’ve hit their mark.

That is a big shipping container home! I really like the open corrugated steel ceilings. Gives it a modern feel. A bit bigger than the one I’ve been thinking about buying.
