Boxpark Pop-Up Shipping Container Mall

It seems as though there is a never-ending way to recycle used shipping containers. And the Boxpark Pop-Up Shipping Container Mall is another good example of that.

Opening their first location in 2011 in Shoreditch, London, UK, Boxpark is the brainchild of founder and CEO Richard Wade. Boxpark Pop-Up Shipping Container Mall is made from recycled used shipping containers that had been stripped down and retrofitted into a unique group of interconnected pop-up stores, just like any of the malls you might find in urban centers around the world.

Except not. Boxpark is really a mobile mall, giving opportunity for retailers who might not be able to afford the high-cost and long-term lease obligations of traditional stand-alone malls. What this creates is a funky, unique, low cost / low risk pop-up mall filled with a stylish mix of fashion and lifestyle brands, galleries, cafés and restaurants – Boxpark “places local and global brands side-by-side, creating a unique shopping and dining destination.”

Boxpark is unique in that, like most structures made from repurposed shipping containers, it’s portable. Having run their course at Shoreditch, Boxpark has announced that they will open their new location in 2016 in Croydon.

Boxpark Pop-Up Shipping Container Mall

Boxpark CroydonBoxpark is anything but your average shopping mall; both parking and restrooms are non-existent (though public transport is close and convenient) and the limited seating of the top-level eateries give it the feel of an outdoor market. It’s more like a community where talented designers, retailers, restaurateurs pack their talent into a modern complex built entirely from used and recycled shipping containers. Occupying about 500,000 square feet with over 40 retailers, eateries and cafes.

With over 18 million shipping containers in existence and with many millions of of those just sitting around in shipping yards collecting rust, there is no shortage of containers from which to choose. This was the genesis of Shipped.com, giving people an easy way to buy and sell these leftover shipping containers. In essence, giving them a new life.

There is an interesting skirmish going on over who came up with the idea for pop-up malls made from shipping containers, with a mall in earthquake ravished Christchurch, New Zealand claiming they came up with the idea first. This raises interesting intellectual property rights concerns. In any case, we’re all for living and shopping green, and applaud anybody who takes these orphan boxes and puts them to good use.

Boxpark is really making its mark. By winning the 2014 eCommerce Newcomer Retailer of the Year Award in 2014, Boxpark is leading the way in portable retailing. “It’s a living, fertile community of brands packed with talent, innovation and attitude that puts creativity and fashion back where they belong: on the street”, and we couldn’t agree more.
