The Giants Repurpose Shipping Containers Into The Yard

The real estate arm of the 3-Time World Champion San Francisco Giants, The China Basin Ballpark Co., take 15 used shipping containers and repurpose them into The Yard at Mission Rock.

They call it a “Pop-Up Shipping Container Village”, we’re calling it very cool.

Located on the other side of the Lefty O’Doul Bridge from AT&T Park, The Yard is a mixed use project taking up a small corner of Lot A, closest to the park.

With its close proximity to the Port of Oakland, sourcing the used shipping containers wasn’t difficult. Two companies had a hand in procuring and modifying the containers; Transport Products Unlimited out of Vallejo and the Long Beach company American Transportation Services.  Both companies participated in the initial modifications, which included reinforcing the shipping containers and cutting windows and doors. Then Urban Bloc in San Leandro took the modified shells and designed and installed the final interiors. The Giants spent around $2.5 mil on the project, which was designed by Blaine Merker of Gehl Studio.

The project started several years ago after the plans for redeveloping the Mission Bay neighborhood began to take shape. Along with the 1500 new housing units and the new UCSF Medical Center that is about to open, the neighborhood started to grow faster than anyone thought.  There became a need to build something to bridge the gap between now and when the rest of the project fully comes on-line, sometime in 2017. But as the neighborhood started growing faster than anyone expected, The Giants decided to capitalize on the opportunity. The Yard provides the neighborhood with a spot to eat, drink and relax before a game, after a game…or even if there’s no game!

Open year ’round from 11am to 8pm, the mixed-use pop-up space has all of your trendy basics covered from an Anchor Brewing Company beer garden to a Peet’s Coffee. Foodservice will be managed by The Courtyard Wine & Streetfood by Off The Grid. They’ll provide tasty Filipino fusion food from Senor Sisig, perfectly-cooked fried or roasted chicken, salads and wraps from Proposition Chicken and serve small-batch gourmet organic ice cream from Humphrey Slocum. The Courtyard tops it off by pouring local wine by the glass. In addition, they’ll have a full schedule of events, from openings to live music.

Finding tenants for The Yard (and other like-minded pop-up projects around The City) was easy. Says John Dannerbeck, senior vice president of Anchor Brewing Co “It’s a lovely opportunity for us to showcase our beer down on the waterfront, which is going to be our new home”.

Taking up only 70 parking spaces with it’s 17,000 square feet, it occupies only a tiny fraction of the lot. And, as is the beauty with shipping containers, they’re totally portable. Once the Misssion Bay project nears completion, The Yard will be dismantled or moved to another location. Or it won’t…it all depends on how the Mission Bay project develops as well as the popularity of The Yard. One thing is for sure, the pop-up mixed-use facilities made from recycled shipping containers are no longer just a trend. It’s an intelligent repurpose of a formerly discarded resource that will continue to develop around the world.

And the best part is you don’t have to wait till you get in the park to get your dog and a beer!
