Affordable Housing From Used Shipping Containers

I was inspired to write this post, Affordable Housing From Used Shipping Containers, by an article I stumbled upon while browsing the net for interesting uses for used chipping containers.

By chance, I found an article written by Christine Walsh in a blog called Jetson Green, which is all about “…enhanc(ing) homes (and the lives of people in them) with beautiful design, smart construction, resource conservation, energy efficiency, water savings, healthy air, green technology, and renewable energy.” Now how cool is that? This is definitely a blog I’ll add to my reading list.

In my search for cool uses for used Shipping Containers, I’m running across two common themes; that Shipping Containers are, more and more, being turned into affordable housing. And that people doing so are generally amazing people.

Walsh’s article focused on a project undertaken by a group of students from the University of Florida in Gainsville, Florida called “Imagine…A Place Called Home” which is intended to raise awareness about the need for more affordable housing in the country. Being from Silicon Valley, I know first-hand how difficult it is to find a decent home at a good price. And while the students aren’t getting into the home building business, they do hope that this month-long project (which is on display at the Reitz Union North Lawn) will help educate people to the fact that used Shipping Containers, like the kind you will find here at Shipped.com, can, with a little elbow grease, be turned into comfortable new housing at an affordable price. And it keeps with the theme of repurposing used shipping containers. And we’re all about that!

With a shipping container borrowed from the modular construction company Williams Scotsman, they created a small but very nice home, outfitted with air conditioning and a TV in a comfortable living area. While it’s only a temporary structure, the group hopes it will shed light on the growing problem of affordable housing across the country.

We think these enterprising young students might be on the right track. Bravo!
